Israel Knesset Votes 60-52 To 'Legalize' Illegal West Bank Settlements
By Darlene Powers Feb 07, 2017
The Israeli parliament on Monday (Feb 6) finalised a controversial law that approved dozens of Jewish outposts built on private Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank.
Hanan Ashrawi - a senior member of the main Palestinian political umbrella body, the Palestine Liberation Organisation - the law gave settlers a green light to "embark on a land grab".
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited his United Kingdom counterpart Theresa May in London on Monday, in the midst of protests in Downing Street by pro-Palestine groups.
"We have really got to take action against the Israeli government as for far too long we have said Israel should abide worldwide law".
But statements this week from the Trump administration have instead presented a muddled policy that is leaving observers in Jerusalem and Washington uncertain about the president's true position - and what he really thinks about Israel's current plans to expand its presence in the West Bank.
Witnesses told Ma'an news agency that at least eight Israeli missiles were fired at several locations across the besieged Palestinian territory. Speaking ahead of the talks, he said, "Iran seeks to annihilate Israel, it seeks to conquer the Middle East, it threatens Europe, it threatens the West, it threatens the world".
Some 100 settlers protesting against the removal of some 300 settlers from Amona, an outpost built without Israeli government authorisation, kicked at Israeli forces who used a high-pressure hose and a wooden pole to batter down sheet metal and furniture blocking the entrances to the synagogue.
The case was bought by the Yesh Din organization against the residents of West Tapuah on behalf of 15 residents of the nearby Palestinian village of Yasuf who claim to be the owners of the land.

Ramalingam, the Secretary I and IV respectively in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), were removed from their posts. Even when she was battling for her life, she had chosen Panneerselvam as her second-in-command", said Stalin.
I urge Israeli legislators to reconsider this move. "This entire land is ours".
The highly controversial legislation, which challenges both worldwide and Israeli law, was backed by 60 Knesset deputies and opposed by 52 on Monday.
The bill would legalize about 4,000 homes in unauthorized outposts across the West Bank - many consisting of little more than rusting mobile homes hastily towed to the sites - that were built on land privately owned by Palestinians.
Mr Netanyahu himself did not attend the vote because he was on a plane back from London when it was held.
US officials said that after previously vetoing anti-Israel resolutions, they felt compelled to abstain because of continued Israeli settlement construction and a recent effort to retroactively legalize dozens of illegal outposts in exchange for compensation for the original Palestinian landowners.
Opposition leader Isaac Herzog said: "I want to say loud and clear: (the) vote tonight is a vote. for or against the general interest of Israel". Naftali Bennet, Israel's education minister and the leader of the Jewish Home party, which has been championing the legislation, called its approval a "revolution" in a Twitter .
The settlers dispute the court's ruling, and say an $80,000 compensation claim granted to some of the Palestinian landowners in a civil suit in 2014 should negate the case.
While the statement appeared to signal a softening of the long-term United States position that settlements are a major obstacle to peace negotiations, it was also interpreted as a rebuke to Israel over the January wave of settlement activity.
