Reliance Jio: Telecom battle continues

In addition, Ambani also announced that Jio now has over 100 million customers on its 4G VoLTE network in 170 days.

Jio has crossed 100 million customer base in 170 days of its launch. The milestone belongs to the Jio community, he said. Instead, users can now pay to make use of the same services which were being offered in the Happy New Year Plan with the Reliance Jio Prime plan.

100 crore GBs were consumed last month on the Jio network, i.e. 3.3 crore GBs/day. Moreover, it is the first to offer free voice and no roaming charges like other established players such as Airtel and Vodafone, which fleeced customers heavily under the garb of roaming charges. This will only be available to existing Jio users. The most expensive plan costing Rs 4,999 offers 75GB free LTE data, plus unlimited free 4G data at night and 150GB free WiFi data.

This offer is only exclusive to those subscribers who will subscribe to Jio before 31st March 2017. For enrolling, one can log on to My Jio app or on the Jio website for subscribing the membership.

Ambani, calling the initial 100 million Jio customers as the co-founder of Jio, as a sign of gratitude announced new Jio Prime Membership Plans starting March 31 this year.

Another intersecting piece of information that recently surfaced is that Apple just joined the association of QI standards. In June 2016, Apple iPhone sales hit 1-billion mark - a figure roughly equivalent to seventh of the world's population.

These Prime users would also receive the entire bouquet of Jio apps for another full year - until 31 March 2018. Before Sep 2016, India was No. 151 in terms of broadband penetration.

Analysts say many subscribers are using Jio as a second mobile connection to take advantage of the free data.

Ambani promises to increase the 4G Base station coverage by 2x more in the coming months, to ensure that Jio covers 99 percent of India's population. This automatically shuts out users of other telecom networks who have not allowed the Jio bug to bite them yet.

Jio has made it very clear its data tariffs will always be cheaper than rivals. "Will will not only match those. but provide 20% more data for all those plans", said Ambani.

"A significant portion of this data is consumed as video and Jio carries almost 5.5 crore hours of video daily on its network".
