Democrats Protest Betsy DeVos by Holding the Senate Floor for 24 Hours
By Darlene Powers Feb 07, 2017
Not a fan of President Donald Trump's selection for education secretary, the not-so beloved Betsy DeVos? If the heat is turned up to an extreme following a senator's announcement of support, one of those senators could rethink.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on DeVos' nomination at noon Tuesday.
Mike Pence may perform a constitutional duty in his third full week as vice president that Joe Biden never did in eight years on the job: Cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate.
"No one and especially not some billionaire ought to keep investments that go up or down in value depending on the decision she makes while she has a job working for the US government", Warren said on the Senate Floor Monday afternoon. "Double down on your advocacy".
Both Stabenow and Peters had already announced they would not be supporting DeVos for the position, joining the rest of the Democratic senators in the chamber who are voting against her nomination.
Opposition to DeVos has been fierce, with senators reporting their phone lines jammed with calls from liberals and teachers' unions.
Studying Super Bowl Ads
There's also a little local flair in the commercials this year, University of Rochester Medical Center will also have a local ad. Not only was it an attention-getting ad, it was a great story that highlighted the two teams actually playing in the game.
Junior Hilary Luong, who presented a current event on DeVos's confirmation hearing, said, "As a student, I feel frightened and apprehensive due to DeVos's lack of experience in education".
Pence, speaking on "Fox News Sunday", predicted victory for their nominee. "Overwhelmingly they've told me that Betsy DeVos should not be our next secretary of education". Such a vote would mark the first time a vice president would be needed to confirm a Cabinet nominee, according to the Senate Historical Office.
Among the names mentioned early as potential targets to flip were GOP Sens. Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey was named as a possibility last week; he has since come out with a statement affirming his support.
For his part, Alexander has maintained that DeVos has the votes to be confirmed.
"It's hard to imagine a worse choice to lead the U.S. Department of Education" said Sen. That would be a massive embarrassment. The only thing clear is who loses in that scenario - our state's children. What we know so far about Betsy DeVos's record concerns us. Stephen Henderson of the Detroit Free Press described DeVos as a "lobbyist" who uses her status and extensive personal wealth to commandeer conversations about education in her home state of MI.
"The after-effects of the widespread public backlash to her nomination will linger", she said. We made a promise that we would do better by our students; that public schools would be the premier standard for outstanding education for all.
