Benedict Cumberbatch warms to idea of Sherlock Holmes holiday special

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic stories. "I thought they'd finally lost the plot, jumped the shark, all the other clichés of television gone mad with itself", he explained.

News that the episode would be turning back the clock first leaked from fan photos on set, but Benedict said he still had no idea how fans will react. The star of the global hit also told how he'd loved dressing up as the old style Holmes, calling it "great, great fun".

Cumberbatch also spoke about pleasing fans (oo-err) with the special: "We haven't disappointed [them] in the past it seems so hopefully this won't - I hope they enjoy it".

"And then there are things I tried to impose on the modern version, like his stature and physicality - a lot of that's done in the Victorian version of the clothing, the collars, the deerstalker and cape and pipe and things". It always is with period drama. "Martin Freeman is probably the funniest thing that happened on set". "You kind of marvel at it"."You feel some of the weight is taken off you".

According to writer Mark Gatiss, who penned the script with Steven Moffat, the story is "a full-blooded Victorian Gothic".

Joining them, as per usual, are Una Stubbs' Mrs. Hudson and Amanda Abbington's Mary Morstan, AKA Mrs. Watson.

Meanwhile, a report from Daily Mail reveals that Sherlockians will have a hard time to crack one of the clues in the "Sherlock" Victorian special, except if you can read Chinese. It would be an interesting experiment to do. It will air on Friday the 1st of January 2016 on BBC One.
