Narendra Modi dines with Lee Hsien Loong at Indian restaurant in Singapore

Asean is the anchor of India's Act East policy, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi said at the 37th Singapore Lecture on Monday night at the Shangri-La hotel, as he laid out his vision for heightened integration with Asia.

In wide-ranging discussions with Singapore leaders, including its Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Tony Tan Keng, Modi stressed on the idea to "create many Singapores" within India. Both the countries have also signed MoUs on a cultural exchange programme and infrastructure development.

Modi stated that the map measuring 52 inches X 52 inches and based on a survey that was done during 1842-45, depicted topographical details of parts of Singapore. The city-state was also involved in the planning of Amaravati, the new capital city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The MoU in the area of civil aviation will enable the two countries to cooperate in several areas of civil aviation services and airport management, starting with Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports.

India and Singapore on Tuesday signed a joint declaration on strategic partnership besides signing 10 agreements cutting across various sectors, giving a boost to bilateral ties.

Later in the day, the PM addressed the Indian diaspora.

Without making any direct reference to the standoff between some countries of South-East Asia and China in South China sea, Modi said: "The most critical need in this region was to uphold and strengthen the rules and norms that must define the collective behavior of the nations".
