South Korea: VW rigged emissions in 125,000 diesel vehicles

Cars to be recalled in South Korea are Euro 5 engine vehicles with 2,000cc and 1,600cc diesel EA189 engines, mainly sold in South Korea between 2008 and 2015 including the popular Tiguan model, the ministry said.
In a release, the Environment Ministry said its investigators had made findings similar to those of their USA counterparts on how the defeat software sensed when the auto was being tested, then activated equipment that reduced emissions. It also imposed 14.1 billion won (12.3 million) in penalty fees.
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the agency is weighing possible enforcement options against Volkswagen related to the three-liter diesel-engine vehicles and continues to investigate the matter.
Volkswagen Group said that the rest of its brands, including Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are also planning corresponding measures for their affected vehicles. The news comes a day after California widened its probe and asked the German automaker to submit a recall plan in 45 days. Audi already stated it would resubmit a revised version of the software, which it hadn't originally disclosed for regulatory review. This software, called a "defeat device", detects when the vehicle is undergoing emissions testing and changes its performance to comply with the emissions standards.

Taking the baton from the environment ministry, the transportation ministry will carry out its own investigation to see if the defeat device installed in those cars could have affected fuel efficiency and safety for passengers.
Audi accepted that its engines behaved differently during emissions testing, but did not confess to the cheating in the same manner as Volkswagen did when proof of software rigging emerged earlier this year. The engines are widely used in premium vehicle models from Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche.
All 8.5 million engines in Europe, including 5.2 million 2.0-liter diesels and 300,000 1.2-liter diesels, will require software updates.
Stadler must push on with the investigation "completely and without regard to individuals", said Mosch, head of Audi's works council and a member of the supervisory board's influential steering committee.
