Vladimir Putin calls for sanctions against Turkey after warplane shot down
By Darlene Powers Dec 07, 2015In an interview with France 24, he said he had called Putin after the jet was shot down but that the Russian leader had not yet called him back.
Russia will keep cooperating with the United States and its partners to fight Islamic State in Syria, but that cooperation will be in jeopardy if there are any repeats of Turkey's shooting down of a Russian jet, Russia's Vladimir Putin said.
Mr. Erdogan's friendly overture however, came after he again vigorously defended Turkey's action and criticized Russian Federation for its operations in Syria.
Putin today discussed the downing with his security council, particularly the "increased tensions over Syria against the background of Turkey's aggressive and unpredictable actions", his spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday said that Ankara has crossed the line by shooting down a Russian warplane this week and warned the incident could severely undermine Turkey's interests.
However, the Russian response was carefully calibrated, indicating Moscow did not want to jeopardize its main objective in the region: to rally worldwide support for its view on how the conflict in Syria should be resolved.
Nevertheless, Erdogan denied Ankara was collaborating with the Islamic State and again denied claims that Turkey had bought any oil from the Islamic State group.
Relations between the former Cold War antagonists have hit a low after Turkey shot down the jet near the Syrian border earlier this week.
"The American side, which leads the coalition that Turkey belongs to, knew about the location and time of our planes' flights, and we were hit exactly there and at that time", Mr Putin said. A voice on the recording can be heard saying "change your heading" in English. Our pilots and our armed forces, they simply fulfilled their duties, which consisted of responding to... violations of the rules of engagement. "But of course incidents like the destruction of our aircraft and the deaths of our servicemen... are absolutely unacceptable", Putin said at a news conference, standing alongside Hollande.
"If we allow our sovereign rights to be violated... then the territory would no longer be our territory", Erdogan said.
Turkey has been angered by Russian air strikes in Syria, particularly those near its border targeting Turkmens, who are Syrians of Turkish descent.
"The direct consequences could lead to our refusal to take part in a whole raft of important joint projects and Turkish companies losing their positions on the Russian market", Medvedev said in a statement. Turkey is a major destination for Russian tourists.
This decree also prohibits the import of certain goods from Turkey. "Either they were not controlling what their allies were doing, or they are leaking this information all over the place", Putin said. "The ball is in Russia's court now", he wrote in a note.
