Putin in Iran for talks on Syria

The Russian president's visit to Iran will be dominated by talks on the Syrian conflict and the Islamic State group.

A Kremlin official as saying that Russian Federation and Iran will jointly oppose "external attempts" at regime change in Syria, putting up a united front against the removal of Assad. Khamenei said the USA had a "long-term plan" to dominate Syria and the Middle East that would "disadvantage all countries, especially Iran and Russian Federation ..."

On the eve of his visit to Tehran Putin signed into law a decree cancelling all restrictions on Russia's cooperation with Iran in compliance with the joint comprehensive action plan for the Iranian nuclear program.

After the visit to Tehran - Putin's first there since 2007 - the Russian leader will host Jordanian King Abdullah II on Tuesday and French leader Francois Hollande on Thursday in Russia.

 

This is Putin's second trip to Iran.
