Mulvaney Answers Congress' Questions About Trump's 2018 Budget
By Norman Carr May 27, 2017
"I will tell you it's probably the last time we can do that", said Mick Mulvaney while testifying before the House Budget committee. Mexico emphatically rejects that notion.
The facts are that the cuts Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program by $616 billion, food stamp program by $191 billion, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program by $22 billion and Social Security disability benefits by almost $70 billion -- all over the next decade.
Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer said the budget cuts $206 billion in infrastructure spending across several Cabinet departments, including $96 billion in planned highway trust fund spending.
STARVING PEOPLE: If you live in South Sudan, Yemen, or Somalia and are now among the estimated 20 million people who are starving this budget won't help you, either.
"The president's put forward today will be damaging to the people in our communities and the places that we call home", Gabbard said in a speech on the House floor Tuesday. "They're not mere shavings, they're deep, deep cuts".
Rep. John Carter, a Texas Republican who chairs the homeland security subcommittee, says the proposed cuts of $767 million to state and local grant programs are "worrisome". Bob Casey, D-Pa., said that Trump's budget isn't the right approach, and that it would result in fewer jobs, lower incomes and less opportunity for families across Pennsylvania.

In agriculture, the proposed budget would limit subsidies to farmers, including for purchasing crop insurance, a move already attacked by farm state lawmakers. "Come on. That doesn't add up". His proposal increases defense spending up around 10 percent, while cuts in areas such as science and research, arts and social welfare programs are prominent.
The truth of the matter is that there can be no plan for long-term fiscal balance that does not include both enhanced revenue and reform of the two biggest entitlement programs in the federal budget, Medicare and Social Security, which together account for 39 percent of all spending. Dick Durbin of IL.
Another problem with the Trump budget is that it's based on the assumption that the economy will achieve sustained growth at a rate of 3 percent. And an initiative of his daughter Ivanka Trump - six weeks of paid family leave - will receive $19 billion.
The administration proposes $200 billion in government funding over 10 years as part of a goal of getting $1 trillion in public and private infrastructure spending.
This mistake drew pushback from former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Keith Hennessey, who was the director of President George W. Bush's National Economic Council.
He defended the budget against charges it drastically cuts funding for important safety net programs like Medicaid, as well as tightening eligibility for disability insurance, a move set to save more than $70 billion over 10 years.
