Key benchmarks in President Donald Trump's budget
By Norman Carr May 24, 2017
US President Donald Trump wants lawmakers to slash healthcare and food assistance programs for the poor as they cut $3.6 trillion in government spending over 10 years, according to the White House›s for next year.
The proposed 2018 immediately came under attack by Democrats and even some of GOP allies declared it dead on arrival.
America's Essential Hospitals expressed concern about the Medicaid cuts included in the budget . Mexico emphatically rejects that notion.
The director of the Office of Management and Budget that kind of growth is achievable.
Instead, the Trump tax plan promises an overhaul that would cut tax rates but rely on erasing tax breaks and economic growth to end up as "revenue neutral".
Republicans are under pressure to deliver on promised tax cuts, the cornerstone of the Trump administration›s pro-business economic agenda, which would cut the business tax rate to 15 percent from 35 percent, and reduce the number of personal tax brackets.
Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer said the budget cuts $206 billion in infrastructure spending across several Cabinet departments, including $96 billion in planned highway trust fund spending.
"Three percent, I'm not seeing how you get there mathematically", said Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C.
So we wouldn't worry so much about this 2018 budget.
Congressman Al Green calls for Trump Impeachment
A Republican-led impeachment of Trump, no matter how attractive Mike Pence may be as a replacement, would be precedent setting. Green originally said that he would wait a few weeks before starting impeachment proceedings , KHOU reported .
The proposal projects that this year's federal deficit will rise to $603 billion, up from $585 billion last year.
The budget proposal, which is for the fiscal year 2018, features cuts in nearly all areas except defense, veterans affairs and border security.
The Trump budget would eliminate the Obama administration's TIGER grant program, saving $5 billion over 10 years in the program that has funded transit projects. Chuck Schumer of NY, asserted that the Trump budget was a betrayal of the president's voters.
"The economic vision outlined in this budget betrays the vast majority of Americans who work hard to support their families, and it's critical that people see once and for all whose side this president is on". Dick Durbin of IL. He noted that while the recession is long over, about 42 million people still receive SNAP benefits, far more than when the recession began.
Trump's budget increases spending in areas like defense and homeland security, and avoids cuts in areas like Medicare and, largely, Social Security, although it does propose reductions in social security disability insurance - a fact that didn't escape notice as it upends Trump's campaign pledge to protect Social Security.
The $4.1 trillion budget request would slash spending for non-defense domestic programs by $54 billion, cutting U.S. EPA by almost one-third (see related story), reducing Interior by about 11 percent (see related story) and decreasing the Energy Department by 6 percent (see related story).
An earlier blueprint from Trump proposed a $54 billion, 10 percent increase for the military above an existing cap on Pentagon spending, financed by an equal cut to nondefense programs.
Trump's budget cuts more than $800 billion from Medicaid over the next decade. Food stamps are paid for entirely through federal funding, so such slashing the budget for the program by 25 percent would be significant.
Virginia's senators focused on the budget's cuts to anti-poverty programs and Medicaid and their effects on Virginia families. The White House may have a better chance sticking to Trump's more traditional sales pitch for "the biggest tax cut in history". This is the magic of the still-to-be-designed Trump tax cuts. "This budget isn't worthy of the American people, and it betrays the millions of struggling Americans who placed their hopes in Donald Trump".
