13 arrests in St. Louis in protests following officer's acquittal

Despite an estimated 140 arrests over the past weekend, demonstrators in St. Louis aren't letting up in their protests against police violence. And protest organizers may not be done.

We recently reported the acquittal of former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley for the 2011 murder of Anthony Lamar Smith.

On Sunday, more than 1,000 people had gathered at police headquarters and then marched without trouble through downtown St. Louis.

Over 140 people have been arrested so far.

Protesters also marched through two shopping malls in a wealthy area of St Louis County.

Singer Ed Sheeran also called off a show. "Let our human spirit here in the city of St. Louis be resilient".

"Folks got to pay attention, right?"

"They're not on the same agenda we are", he said.

"What we have is a legacy of policies that have disproportionately impacted people along racial and economic lines". "This is not new to St. Louis or unique to St. Louis, but this is a challenge". Police said that 10 businesses were damaged.

Blueberry Hill restaurant and concert venue owner, Joe Edwards, expressed his frustration.

"While many police officers act respectfully toward those they serve, we must acknowledge how regularly communities of color experience racial profiling and abuse from local law enforcement, including here in the St. Louis region", the ACLU concluded.

And the protests received some star power, with rapper and actor Nick Cannon stopping by one of the gatherings.

Protesters on Tuesday chanted Smith's name, and held up their hands for six minutes for the six years it took for Stockley to be tried. Police did not intervene. The ACLU that the police "unlawfully detained and arrested people, used excessive force and unconstitutionally broke up a peaceful assembly of people" during Sunday night's protests. St. Louis police took the action after several windows were broken and concrete planters and trash cans overturned. "Our streets" chants from police "inflammatory". There was very little police presence, no one was arrested and no property damage reported.

A U.S. civil rights group signalled Tuesday that it would sue the St Louis police department, as criticism mounted over the law enforcement response to days of violent protests.

The cause for the escalation was not clear.

Protesters say police were overly aggressive and kept demonstrators from leaving the area because they were surrounded by cops.

The crowd became more violent when several individuals began throwing bricks, water bottles filled with paint thinner, gasoline, and balloons filled with a red liquid substance. The news service says one officer suffered a leg injury and was hospitalized. His condition wasn't known.

In 2014 the synagogue, led by Rabbi Susan Talve, served as a sanctuary space for protesters after a grand jury decided not to indict Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson in the August shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Organizer Anthony Bell begged the demonstrators to practice Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s form of peaceful protesting.
