Trump picks his Supreme Court nominee: Neil Gorsuch

Gardner's Democratic counterpart, Sen.

Judge Gorsuch took a humbler approach, and showed the flair for language that has won him praise as a legal writer. He said little as tensions escalated over the confirmation of a judge from his home state. But others already are demanding Gorsuch hit the 60-vote bar, and laying the groundwork for a potential filibuster.

"This is nothing new. It was a bar met by each of President Obama's nominees", noted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. Although Republicans now have a majority in the Senate (52-46 with two Democratic supporting Independents), Democrats are said to be considering a filibuster, which would require a 2/3rds majority (60 votes in the 100-member Senate) to override. But Democrats are still incensed since Republicans refused to even hold hearings for Barack Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland.

The Senate rules could be changed by simple majority, eliminating the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees. "He's a talented, smart guy who will be an excellent justice".

"You have a situation now saying 'well we'll do the nuclear option now.' If they do it now, it will be nuclear option forever".

Republicans have begun pressuring Democrats to take up Gorsuch's nomination as soon as possible. That support is exactly what Gorsuch will need over the next few crucial months, especially after many senate democrats vow to derail his nomination.

He added: "I hope we have an elegant process as opposed to a demeaning process".

Trump's choice sets up a second straight year of bitter partisanship over the court seat, which was left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia last year. "Judge Gorsuch voted twice to deny contraceptive coverage to women, elevating a corporation's religious beliefs over women's health care", Feinstein said.

Late past year , several police officers kidnapped Jee Ick-joo and strangled him at the police headquarters at Camp Crane. The Philippine government has effectively undermined prior United Nations efforts to investigate the "drug war" killings.

Most Democrats want to fight.

"This is a stolen seat", Sen. Jeff Merkley of OR, the Associated Press reported.

There is no law that says a Supreme Court justice can not be nominated by a president close to the end of his or her term in office. Judge Gorsuch has an excellent constitutional background, and was confirmed without any opposition to a seat on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2006.

Boies said there have to be the same rules for both Republicans and Democrats. "I am a man of my word".

Two of Judge Gorsuch's most high-profile appeals court rulings saw him side with business owners who objected on religious grounds to funding birth control via staff insurance plans.

While he has no clear public position on abortion, President Donald Trump did say that he was going to name someone who would reverse the Roe v Wade decision that legalised abortion nationwide in 1973.

"In the early days of this administration we've been engaging very regularly on a broad range of issues with members of the Senate, and we'll be continuing to that effort", Pence said.

In interviews, McConnell wouldn't explicitly address the nuclear option, but repeatedly told Fox News Tuesday night, "We're going to get the judge confirmed".
