Overview
Lord Elgin was a British diplomat and ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century, best known for removing a large number of marble sculptures and architectural elements from the Parthenon and other buildings on the Acropolis in Athens. These artifacts, now known as the Elgin Marbles or Parthenon Marbles, are a subject of ongoing debate regarding their ownership and restitution to Greece.
