Ultrasonic Anti-fouling Works

Take hull fouling for example. Hull fouling (also known as Bio-Fouling) is the build-up of algae and barnacles on the surface of the hull below the waterline. As explained here, at first this starts as a thin layer known as a bio-film. Harmless enough at first sight but as time passes this slowly thickens and forms a layer that causes drag. Left untreated this causes hull damage and ultimately a hole and afore mentioned obvious pitfall (sinking).

Ultrasonic anti-fouling can thankfully provide a solution though. Ultrasonic anti-fouling measures were discovered in the 30s, by Paul Langevin – a French scientist working with sonar on submersibles. Back then the technology was dismissed as too expensive and not fully researched until decades later.
