Female pilot killed in PAF training aircraft crash

Pakistan's Air Force says a fighter jet has crashed during a routine training exercise and that the aircraft's female co-pilot died following the crash.

It was reported today that Flying officer Mariam Mukhtar was killed in the F-7 plane crash near Kundian, Mianwali.

In his condolence message, he said Maryam Mukhtar was a pride of Pakistani nation and role model.

Pakistan's military has suffered a series of air disasters in recent months. The pilot ejected to safety.

Flying Officer Marium Mukhtiar and Squadron Leader Saqib Abbasi both ejected from a Pakistani Air Force FT-7PG after encountering an "in-flight emergency" during a routine training mission, a PAF statement said.

Flying Officer Mukhtiar, who was 24, spoke to BBC News previous year of her journey into a traditionally male-dominated world. The male pilot was not badly injured and is recovering in hospital.

She also said her mother had been concerned about her decision to join the force but had supported her throughout. Her family held their heads up high as they her dignified final journey and the respect that she had instilled; however, sadness still afflicted the heart of all attendees at the funeral.
