BMW 1 Series sedan previewed in Compact Sedan Concept

BMW has unveiled an all new compact sedan concept based on the 2 Series active tourer platform.

In the Guangzhuo Auto Show in China, BMW has unmasked what is the Concept Compact Sedan, which could be the new BMW 1 Series, or 2 Series for that matter - though what has been showcased by the Bavarian automaker is merely aesthetic, so we don't know what power this pretty little compact possesses.

Based on the concept's exterior, X-Tomi Design has worked on a new render of BMW's future entry-level sedan by toning down the design to production-spec levels. Hence, the revealing of what could be the basis of a mass-produced compact premium sedan from BMW shows the company's desire to capitalize on the now trending segment. Powertrain options are as yet unknown although they are likely to be carried forwards from existing UKL platform based vehicles like the BMW 1-Series hatchback and the BMW 2-Series range. The vehicle of course gets the familiar kidney shaped grilles up front along with muscular haunches on the bonnet and fenders typing up nicely with the vented front bumper.

Tentatively called 2 Series Gran Coupe, BMW's upcoming sedan will essentially be a more spacious version of the aforementioned 2 Series fitted with four doors.

While a next-gen 1-Series with FWD isn't really big news, it comes as a surprise that BMW wants to make the 2-Series front-wheel drive as well.

However, the BMW 1 Series sedan is likely to ride on the FWD UKL platform, unlike the two models it slots in between.
