PGA Tour rookie Xander Schauffele took the honours at the Tour Championship on Sunday in Atlanta, but Justin Thomas was the big victor in the cash stakes as he claimed the FedEx Cup.

Schauffele netted $1.58 million for winning the Tour Championship, while Thomas added $945,000 for his second-place finish.

Schauffele would've gone down as one of the most unlikely champions in FedEx Cup history, a 23-year-old rookie who was simply anxious about keeping his tour card before an fantastic summer stamped him as another rising star.

BEACHWOOD, Ohio - Nicholas Lindheim made a downhill birdie putt from about 30 feet on the first playoff hole after bogeying the final two holes in regulation and won the DAP Championship on Sunday to regain his PGA Tour card.

Tied for fourth at 6-under 134 is Patrick Reed, England's Justin Rose (66), Gary Woodland (67) and Spain's Jon Rahm (67).

"I really felt like I played or had the opportunity to really go decently low today or post a pretty solid number out there", the 24-year-old Thomas said. Casey turned 40 this past July, and he's holding strong against the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and more.

The three-time major champion ended the tournament tied for seventh, five shots adrift of Schauffele at seven under following his three-under 67.

Casey last won a PGA Tour title in 2009, and said: "My last round here a year ago was a 64 and I'd take a 64 on Sunday".

But the biggest prize at East Lake, the FedEx Cup and its hefty payout, went to the guy who finished second.

"I thought I missed it, that's why I couldn't' even react to celebrate because I thought I just missed a two-footer to win", Schauffele said. This means that players who are subject to the reshuffle can't necessarily rest on their laurels if they have a good run of a few weeks during a season.

Thomas had the FedEx Cup wrapped up with two holes to play thanks to mistakes behind him.

Spieth bolstered his hopes of winning the $10million jackpot with a hole-out eagle at the 10th and kick-in birdie at the 13th, but slipped back behind Thomas with a bogey from eight feet at the 15th.

He turned pro and would get that first PGA Tour win three years later, missing the Tour Championship by one spot in 2012. I just want to win.

He carded birdies on the third and fifth, an eagle on the sixth and another birdie on the seventh after nearly holing his approach. He eventually chipped onto the green and then one-putted for par.

Casey. The third-round leader had a 4-stroke lead at one point and has been under par every day. Right now, I'm too busy just trying to focus on trying to string together four great rounds of golf.
