Nitish Kumar's New Bihar Cabinet Takes Oath After Trust Vote Success

He again took oath as the Chief Minister with the support of the National Democratic Alliance on Thursday. It is quite a record. The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), which is bitterly opposed to the BJP, has three members.

When asked about what were the chances of a grand alliance against BJP in 2019, the former chief minister said, "It is not about grand alliance".

The coup however seems to mark the end of Kumar's ambition to move back into national politics (between 1998 and 2001 he was a railways and agriculture minister in a BJP-led government) and become prime minister.

Tejashwi unleashing a tirade of fiery salvos on Kumar, said that the latter has stitched an alliance with a party who conspired the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

His action dealt a blow to the strength and unity of Opposition, while giving further boost to the image of BJP as a fast-acting, decisive party under the strong and popular leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Yadav's uneducated wife Rabri had held the chief minister's post for nine years after corruption charges led to Yadav being banned from office, as he still is. The whole affair threatened to damage Nitish's reputation as a chief minister who was committed to corruption-free governance. "If they had the majority, why didn't they pass the floor test?" he said.

Nitish's backroom parleys with the BJP was hedging against counter-hedging by Lalu, where he was trying to save his skin in the face of serious corruption allegations.

Nitish Kumar could have done nothing better in his life than be a politician - he has maneuvered his career graph with great deftness and a flair for political calculation.
