Apple debuts HomePod speaker to bring Siri into the living room

At the time of this writing, Apple TVs are still absent on Amazon - replaced with Amazon Fire TV when you perform a search - but that seems likely to change later this year.

Apple HomePod is the smart speaker that wants to be at the center of your home audio experience, and that's great news for iPhone and iPad users. Like Apple TV, the HomePod allows for remote access to any HomeKit compatible device through the Home app.

Early previews suggest that the quality of sound produced by the HomePod is superior to Google Home or Amazon's Echo, although they have yet to be compared in controlled conditions. Pulling music from the Apple library, the speaker was presented as being able to recognize its placement and direct rich audio sound into the room. It has a six-microphone array with advanced echo cancellation, which Apple says will enable "Siri to understand people whether they are near the device or standing across the room, even while loud music is playing".

The HomePod speaker will sell for $349, twice as much as the Amazon Echo, and will start shipping in December.

"That both plays to Apple's strength and history in music and avoids the direct comparison in terms of price because this really does a lot more". Apple created a new Siri-focused watch interface, which personalizes notifications based on the user's behavior at different times of the day. Apple says that "only after "Hey Siri" is recognised locally on the device will any information be sent to Apple servers, encrypted and sent using an anonymous Siri identifier". But many expect 2017 to be a bumper year for new Apple products to cap off its successful decade.

Focusing on sound quality would give Apple an advantage, particularly given its historical strength in music, if it moves to another front in its war against Google and Amazon.com.

Had Pittsburgh scored another goal, this one could have ended differently. "You don't want to give up two quick goals like that". They have been held to just three shots , none of them goals, on their last ten man advantages. "But we believe in these guys".

While there's a chance Apple could reveal more colors for the HomePod between now and December, nothing was said to imply that.

Blau was also impressed by Apple's "pretty strong offering", especially on the AI end. And Amazon on Thursday announced that its Echo line of smart home hubs now lets users further customize their reminders and timers on the device - a small but useful update for two core uses of these devices.

Amazon just unveiled a version of Echo with a camera, touch-screen display and video-calling capabilities.

Apple Pay is making a play in the peer-to-peer payments space. It would be Apple's first new product since its smartwatch in 2015.

New features coming to iPhones and iPads, meanwhile, include marginal improvements such as syncing messages to Apple servers in the cloud, saving storage space on phones and tablets.
