Rogue state North Korea has nuclear weapons and is thought to be trying to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles which could threaten the US.

During the 90-minute session, envoys from more than 20 countries, including North Korea's main ally China, as well as Britain, France, Russia and the United States, condemned North Korea's test-firing of four ballistic missiles on Monday.

The United States has confirmed it is taking steps to enhance its ability to defend against North Korea's ballistic missiles.

Wu warned both countries that "the large-scale joint military exercise between the US and South Korea is not helping with the settlement of the Korean peninsula issue".

Abe said Trump agreed that the threat from North Korea had reached a "new level" for Japan, which relies on the "nuclear umbrella" of the United States to protect it from regional threats.

Tokyo had "lodged a stern protest with North Korea", Abe told reporters.

Leaders of the two countries spoke on the phone early March 7, hours after the arrival of THAAD elements here, reiterating their shared firm stance on North Korea's evolving missiles threats.

The North hates the military drills, which run until late April and which analysts say force its impoverished military to respond with expensive deployments and drills of their own.

The European Union has also said it would consult with Japan and worldwide partners on how to react.
