DNC Elects Pro-TPP Establishment Democrat As Its New ChairmanBy Darlene Powers Feb 26, 2017
Members of the Democratic National Committee selected former secretary of labor Tom Perez to be their chairman on Saturday in a closely contested election that took two rounds to be settled.
Democratic National Committee (DNC) delegates gathered in Atlanta picked Perez on Saturday, speaking after his win of the "earnest work we must do to defeat Donald Trump".
After being appointed Perez's deputy, Ellison asked his supporters to "give everything" in their backing of Perez. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, while Perez has won the endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden and is a favorite among the big labor unions.
Tom Perez is hitting the Sunday show circuit following his election as the Democratic Party's new leader. Supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who had lobbied hard for Ellison, anxious that the party was alienating the growing "resistance" that has organized against President Donald Trump.
"You are the ones who can bring comfort to people fearing a ban or a wall or losing their Social Security", Ellison appealed to the gathering, adding that "the American people need us in the moment".
Standing onstage after Perez's victory, Ellison called for unity within the Democratic Party, telling supporters that Democrats "don't have the luxury to be divided".
His interviewer, George Stephanopoulos, responded incredulously, saying "I know you don't believe that", but Ellison held firm.
Harrison, a charismatic young chairman from a red state, was in a battle for third place with South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttiegieg. Mr. Ellison received 200 votes.

His mental lapses on the court this year kept him riding the bench, seeing the majority of his minutes come in garbage time. The Houston Rockets, with the NBA's fourth-best record at 40-18, made about $5 million in salary cap space by sending K.J.
He wasn't the first major candidate in the race (that was Ellison).
He told his party they faced a crisis of confidence after the election of Donald Trump, whom he said was the worst president in U.S. history. Ellison had been one of the few members of Congress to publicly back Sanders' presidential bid.
Even with all the last-minute jockeying, the race has a cordial and complimentary vibe, with candidates all but falling over themselves to agree with each other at its many public forums and debates.
President Donald Trump responded to the DNC's election in a lighter tone.
"The reality is that this was a hard choice between a number of solid progressive candidates all with track records of positive organizational development and grassroots campaign experience", Mancini said in a release.
Among the tough tasks facing Perez will be choosing on which fronts to oppose Republicans and which to engage them, according to Jim Manley, a Democratic strategist and former colleague of Perez under the late Sen. An openly gay Navy veteran of the Afghanistan war and a Rhodes Scholar, Buttigieg raised his profile, and will continue to enjoy buzz as a rising Democratic star without alienating any party faction.
It has been decades since there was a competitive race for chair. "I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party!". Republicans control the White House, Congress and about two-thirds of US statehouses.
